April 2024 saw Meta release two variants of the Llama 3 model: one with 8B parameters and another with 70B parameters. I’ve previously explored the 700B parameter incarnation in this article where I explained its use in data analysis and visualization.

Today’s spotlight is on the more compact 8B parameter model. Yielding substantial performance gains over its predecessor from the Llama 2 series, this model is ideal for local deployment using a tool called Ollama. Instruction for setup and installation will follow.
